The J40R1 LED module utilises Driver on Board (DOB) architecture – the LED driver is integrated directly onto the module’s circuit board, rather than being a separate component within the luminaire. This allows the module to be connected directly to the 230V AC mains supply, eliminating the need for an external LED power supply as part of the overall power supply system.
This architecture has significant economic and design implications. The absence of a separate power supply means one fewer item to purchase in the luminaire specification, a lower total cost of materials (BOM), and no need to select, dimension and find space for an additional component within the housing. For the luminaire designer, this eliminates a common problem: where to fit the power supply, how to cool it, and how to route the additional cabling between the power supply and the module.
The simpler architecture of DOB is sometimes associated with the risk of light flicker; however, the J40R1 module keeps this risk under control – an SVM (stroboscopic visibility measure) below 0.9 and a Pst LM (short-term flicker index) below 1 confirm compliance with visual comfort requirements, which are particularly important in office spaces and areas of prolonged exposure to light.
A second consequence of the DOB architecture is its dimensions: a diameter of just 40 mm and a total height of 41.4 mm (including the optics) allow for significant miniaturisation of downlight fixtures, particularly in suspended ceilings with limited installation depth or in structures with a low-profile, slender design.
An optional mounting kit is available for the module, comprising a dedicated 3D-printed holder that connects the LED module to the optics. The holder and optics are sold separately from the module – this allows customers flexible choice: they can use a ready-made, custom-fit ALSC mounting or design their own method of integrating the module with the optics in the luminaire.
The module is available in two colour temperatures – 2700K and 3000K – whilst maintaining a high colour rendering index (Ra90) in both cases.
The module is phase-dimmable.
Installation of the module requires compliance with national safety regulations regarding direct connection to the 230V AC mains supply. The module is suitable for Class I (earthing required) and Class II luminaires, provided that the relevant safety standards for the respective class are observed.
